Genetic Counseling
Who are genetic counselors?
- Genetic counselors are specialized health care professionals with expertise in understanding family health histories, choosing appropriate genetic testing for individuals and families, and interpreting genetic test results. Genetic counselors are also trained to help individuals and families understand and cope with the emotions that surround genetic tests and their implications.
Where can I find a genetic counselor?
- If you are interested in speaking with a genetic counselor by phone:
- Ferre Institute (www.ferregenetics.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy families, is offering a phone consultation with a genetic counselor to help you understand your BRCA test result. The purpose of this consultation is not to take the place of a formal in-person genetic counseling session, but instead to help triage whether further testing might be appropriate for you in light of your genetic test results.
- For an in-person consultation:
- Visit www.nsgc.org (National Society of Genetic Counselors) and click on “Find a counselor” to search for an appropriate professional in your area.
